This is a retelling of an Appalachian folktale. One fine morning, Jack stops by his mother's cabin to visit her and his two brothers, Tom and Will. Ma goes into the kitchen to make biscuits and discovers that her sody sallyratus is missing. Without it, she can't bake biscuits and without biscuits, the boys can't eat. First Tom, then Will, and finally Ma walk to the store to buy some sody. But when they don't come back, Jack goes to investigate. As he stomps across the rickety footbridge over Cold Water Creek, . . . he meets abig old hungry bear. Did he eat the others? And will Jack remember to get the sody sallyratus?
