Born in in 1959 in Nkhata Bay in Malawi, Jomwa Phiri began his career as an artist as a paddle carver, selling his paddles to local fishermen. In 1982, he began painting on glass, doing mostly wildlife and village scenes and finally in 1987 he began his painting on canvas. Jomwa has grown up in and is living in the environment that supplies him with ideas for his paintings.
